Learning Film Poster Painting with Rehman Bhai

This workshop was organised by Bombay Arts for visiting students from Royal College of Art, London. The purpose was to facilitate an interaction between design students and local craftspersons.

Mr. S. Rehman, one of the last practicing film poster painters in Mumbai, was the mentor in this internship. He offered his studio space located within Alfred Cinema to set up a week long internship for visiting students.

The internship resulted in a jointly painted poster of a fictional film (called Teen Daku ?= Three Bandits) featuring all the three participants as lead characters in this film. Mr. Rehman guided the students throughout the process: from the overall composition for the poster, the posture and proportions of the characters, to the colour scheme and background action. The students also learnt colour mixing and brush use along with valuable tips on working with oil paints on canvas.
