“Bombay” no longer signifies a geographical region (the city having since transmogrified to Mumbai), but it continues to represents a spirit that endures. It symbolizes an attitude that is innovative, spontaneous, creatively dynamic and egalitarian in nature. This spirit thrives in popular cultures and informal creative practices that sprout here and then – in barber saloons, in street stalls, in music shops, and on rickshaws, as posters or stickers, as toys or good luck charms from Bhopal, to Baroda, to Bangkok. These transient expressions capture the essence of our existence at a given point of time. It is these practices that Bombay Arts feeds on. Bombay Arts is the website of Vishal Rawlley. He is a freelancer working with new-media, video, print graphics and illustration. Bombay Arts projects are supported through grants, fellowships, residencies, commissions or personal funds. To expand its scope of activities and to involve more interested people, Bombay Arts actively conducts workshops on popular art practice, innovative use of creative media, urban intervention tactics, etc. Bombay Arts also organises internships for design students with local craftspersons.
